HUD Design with Designer and Director Ash Thorp

Lesson 1 Getting Started

Creating a heads-up display (HUD) begins with understanding what exactly a HUD is and what it’s intended to do. In this first lesson, Ash will cover some of the most common questions and roadblocks faced when designing HUDs, and simple tricks on how to solve them. You’ll analyze various HUDs from films and games, break down the stages and components, and begin sketching assets to use in later lessons.

Lesson 2 HUD Modules

After you’ve begun to wrap your head around the purpose and function of your HUD, the next step will be the design phase. To begin, Ash will demonstrate some techniques for creating an “Asset Army” which will be reused and repurposed throughout various modules in the design. From there, you’ll create a base version of the HUD, as well as additional modes for greater storytelling potential.

Lesson 3 Creating HUD Skins

Creating variation in your HUD design could be the key to unlocking the potential of your concepts. In this lesson, Ash will walk you through the process of taking your vector assets into Photoshop and generating a variety of looks using different color schemes. Utilize the benefits which color has on composition, and prepare your designs for final looks.

Lesson 4 Final Concepts

Bring your HUDs to the next level by integrating them into a scene and compositing final renders. Ash will cover several techniques to make your design as appealing as possible, and cover tips on how to best present your work. The final portion of the lesson will cover workflows to prepare files for animation, which you can follow up in our HUD Animation course by Ryan Cashman.
